Research Abstract
The past associated with dramatic characters plays a pivotal role in shaping and influencing their present. From this standpoint, television drama operates on a fluid transition between these two timeframes (past and present), relying on the utilization of visual semiotics, narrative disruption techniques (flashbacks), as well as visual and auditory effects. Together, these elements contribute to reshaping the past, allowing it to interweave within the folds of the present or forcefully interrupt it through both auditory and visual systems. Accordingly, this research stems from the following primary question: What is the mental image of the past in television drama?
The research consists of four main chapters. The First Chapter (Methodological Framework) defines the research problem, its significance, and its objectives, which aim to uncover the mental image of the past through the dramatic image, in addition to defining the research boundaries (temporal, spatial, and objective) and operationalizing its terms. The Second Chapter (Theoretical Framework and Literature Review) comprises two sections. The first section is titled "Employing Visual Elements to Construct a Mental Image," which discusses the mechanisms of utilizing visual components to build a mental image that stimulates suspense for the recipient and drives them to explore the ambiguous and obscure aspects of the dramatic text. The second section, titled "Representations of Past Scenes in Television Drama," addresses the combination of visual cues, narrative structures, and technical effects that create the mental image of the past and express it with powerful expressive indications. The Third Chapter (Research Procedures) outlines the study's reliance on the descriptive-analytical approach. It defines the research population, selects its purposive sample, and formulates the analysis tool (derived from the indicators of the theoretical framework) after submitting it to a panel of experts and referees to ensure its validity and reliability Meanwhile, the Fourth Chapter (Analysis and Results) includes the analysis of the research sample, represented by the Arabic television series (Al-Aghar) directed by Yasser Samy. This chapter concludes with a presentation of the prominent findings and conclusions reached by the researcher, followed by a list of sources and references utilized in the study.
